Once you make this Easy Homemade Sloppy Joe’s recipe you won’t want to go back to anything else. Top the sandwich with fried onion rings and serve on a sweetened honey bun. This sloppy joes recipe can be made with ground turkey or beef.
Sloppy Joe’s sandwiches and tater tots are a classic childhood combination that I still make well within my 30’s. Since I have read books like “Skinny Bitch” and several others, I have been particularly wary of processed foods. But, I know sometimes if you want something quick they’re hard to avoid. Yet in still, I have been on a mission on making everything I can from scratch to avoid as much Red 40’s and artificial stuff that no one can ever pronounce as much as possible. When it comes to sloppy Joes, this was a dish that was a priority.
How to make Sloppy Joes
Looking at the ingredient list for this recipe, I know it can seem a bit overwhelming. Believe me, I do. But there are a few recipes on my blog my friends that require a few more ingredients than you may normally see on my blog. In the case of this sloppy joes recipe, it’s okay. Everything you need to make this dish you may already have in your pantry is cheap to purchase, and the seasonings are something you will definitely use again. Trust me! Now that is out the way, let’s get into it.
This sloppy joes sauce puts your premade sloppy joes mixes to shame. You can definitely taste a difference. In this recipe, you will find some red wine, vinegar, brown sugar, cayenne pepper, onions, peppers, Worcestershire sauce, and (an added touch by me) some Liquid Smoke. All of which you will definitely need for more recipes on my blog, like my Oven Baked Pork Ribs, Braised Short Ribs, and Greek Burgers with Tzatziki Sauce, or just to have in your kitchen. You start off as you would anything else and cook your veggies and then your choice of protein. Once your meat is cooked, you will begin to add all of the ingredients to the pot and let everything simmer. It begins to taste better the longer it sits. If you are making this for a crowd, You can leave it on your stove on low, or place it in a crockpot on low and allow people to feed themselves.
As much as I would love to take full credit for this recipe, I can’t. This recipe has been adapted by one of m favorite celebrity chefs, Guy Fieri. That’s right, this is Guy Fieri Sloppy Joe’s recipe and I want to thank him for it. Not only did he give me a great recipe to make some good joes, but he also topped them off with some easy homemade Maui Onion Rings! This entire recipe makes me wonder what in the hell have I been eating all my life and why am I just now eating real sloppy joes?!
The Crunch from the onion rings, to the rich and savoriness of the Sloppy Joe mixture, and the sweetness of the Hawaiian roll is pure bliss. YOU MUST USE THE HAWAIIAN ROLLS, btw! I am not even kidding this recipe is wonderful! It is the best thing ever. And, it makes a lot so you can freeze it if you don’t eat it all. Just writing this blog is making my mouth water. If you don’t try anything else that I suggest to you, please try this sloppy joes recipe. I promise you won’t regret it. I made some minor alterations to this recipe but I did put the original ingredients in parentheses.
Happy Eating!

- 1/2 Green Bell Pepper, Diced
- 1/2 Red Onion, Diced
- 1 pound Ground Angus Beef
- 1 pound Italian Sausage
- 2 Tablespoons Minced Garlic
- ¼ cups Red Wine
- ¼ cups Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1 Tablespoon Jalapeno Peppers, Diced
- 1 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
- 1 Tablespoon Paprika
- 1 teaspoon Ground Cumin
- 1 teaspoon Dry Mustard Powder
- ¾ cups Tomato Paste
- 2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar, Packed
- ½ cups Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 teaspoon Hot Sauce, Optional
- 1 teaspoon Liquid Smoke (optional)
- Salt And Pepper, to taste
- 8 whole Hawaiian Buns
- FOR THE ONION RINGS:
- 1 quart Canola Oil
- 2 whole Eggs
- 1 cup Milk
- 2 cups Flour
- 2 teaspoons Cayenne Pepper
- 2 teaspoons Paprika
- 2 teaspoons Garlic Powder
- 2 Tablespoons Salt
- 3 cups Vidalia Onions Or Another Sweet Onion Cut Into Half Moons Or Rings
Instructions
- For the Sloppy Joes:
- In a large skillet over medium high heat, heat the oil. Add the peppers and onions and cook for 5 minutes or until softened.
- Add the beef and Italian sausage and cook thoroughly. Break up the meat while cooking. One the meat is complete, add the garlic and stir. I did not drain the grease but if there is a lot of grease, go ahead and drain some of that excess grease out.
- Stir in the wine and the remaining ingredients (except the rolls). Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, until mixture thickens. I would allow it to simmer as long as possible. The longer the better.
- Serve on rolls with onion rings/straws.
- For the onion rings/straws:
- In a medium heavy-bottomed pot, heat the oil to 350ºF.
- Whisk together the eggs and milk in a medium bowl. Mix the flour, cayenne, paprika, garlic powder, and salt in another.
- I cut the onions as rings but you can cut them as half-moons. Soak the onions slices in the egg-milk mixture for 10 minutes. Shake off the excess liquid and dredge them in the flour. Add them to the oil and cook until golden brown, about 3 minutes. Remove and turn to paper towels. Repeat with the remaining onion slices.
